A member of Comité Vida (immigrant defense advocacy and services) wanted people to come together in Sonoma County to support the Standing Rock Sioux water protectors. She asked a friend who works at the Peace & Justice Center of Sonoma County, to put together a kick-ass flyer to invite people to meet to talk about ways to support the Standing Rock Sioux. On September 24, 2016, around 30 people showed up at A'Roma Roasters Cafe in Santa Rosa, CA. And that is how our group began.
We work to get the word out about Standing Rock, raise money, and call people to action to support Standing Rock. Together we are applying increasing amounts of public pressure to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). You can see some of our accomplishments on the News/Updates/FAQs page under Coverage of Local Support (see links at the top), including organizing a vigil and march on December 4, 2016 that drew around 500 participants. It's astonishing how many efforts are going on in Sonoma County alone to support Standing Rock. We continue to hear of local residents who are going to Standing Rock or who have returned from Standing Rock. We are now working to network with other groups so that we can work together more effectively, avoid duplicating our efforts and collaborate on actions and events.
